Juan Contreras III, P.E.
Mr. Juan Contreras, P.E. is a Senior Vice President and the Gulf Coast Region Director of Michael Baker International. Juan graduated from Texas A&M University in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and continued his education, obtaining his Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering (Structures) from the University of Texas at Austin in 1989. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Texas, California, and Pennsylvania.
Juan has 30 years of experience in the design and management of transportation projects. His emphasis in transportation has been in the design, analysis, and inspection of highway, transit, and railroad structures. Through his career, he has served as design engineer, bridge team leader, structural task manager, and project manager. His work with bridge ratings, analyses, and bridge inspections on a host of bridge types in Texas has supplemented his knowledge of bridge structures, providing a strong foundation in design. In addition to his hands-on design experience, Juan has provided management and technical direction to staff and has been responsible for coordinating detail design with multiple structural teams and subconsultants, ensuring continuity in design, and plans preparations.
For the last 21 years of his career, Juan has managed large structural design teams on urban reconstruction and new design projects for multi-level interchanges, and tollways in high-traffic corridors involving phased construction. A number of these projects involved complex construction staging, structural widening, pavement salvage, noise walls, retaining walls, utility relocation, environmental permitting, and railroad coordination. His experience encompasses a variety of structural systems and materials including cast-in-place; precast/prestressed; cast-in-place post-tensioning; steel, including horizontally curved girders; and cable-stayed systems.
